    Video #1- HMSA
    Internet Safety Tales by Waianae High School
    Run Time: 31 sec

    Internet Safety Tales was chosen as best of show for good reason. In terms of audio the video had consistent sound effects matching the scene whether it was the instant message clicks matching or just various sound enhancements throughout. When it comes to the lighting, because everything was animated in the video everything is easily seen or purposely made dark for effect. The editing is fairly simple with clean cuts but very effective. The transitioning with the book was a very cool touch. The scenes are very well drawn and the animators seem to have tried to make as many nice or varying angles as possible. Though there are not any real 3/4 angle shots most are from the front, back or sides. The message of the video is on internet safety, meaning online predators in this case. It's directed towards teenagers and the younger audience because this generation is more susceptible to using technology and being taken advantage of. Overall I believe that the video was animated splendidly. Although there are a few scenes that could be enhanced. One of which was the scene where red riding hood was reaching for the door. If possible it could have been better if it seemed correctly animated not only more smoothly but more natural to human movements.

    Video #2- Internet Safety Awards
    Cyber Bullying Rap by Myron Thompson Academy
    RunTime: 27 sec

    Although I don't personally think this video was the best I believe it did have qualities of a winner. The concept of the video was very different from what I usually see in videos because the entire video was a rap. The lighting was generally well and they had a different approach to the visuals that somewhat attracted me yet I was unfamiliar to the style. Their song or "rap" was an interesting approach to the audio except the problem is that the levels aren't equal and some parts are too quiet. I was impressed with their animation though. They were able to draw very different angles and they managed to draw almost a 360 of their character. They had very cool action scenes when they animated the characters, which by the way were very nicely designed characters. The video was targeted to teens. They focused on cyber bullying because many teens and kids are harassed by their peers online. They used a teenager as the main character so you can easily tell it's meant for that age group. An easy way to quickly improve the video would be to fix the audio to make it all clear and lucid as well as making the animation a bit smoother because it was choppily animated.

    Video #3- HMSA
    Item Number Death by Maui High School
    Runtime: 27 sec

    I believe this video was a winner for their originality. Their approach to their PSA on tobacco was as if they were selling a product on an infomercial. They were able to portray all the negative side effects while making it ironical to have a sense of humor. The audio was clear and the girl in the video spoke pretty well. The lighting in the video was bright and crisp so it didn't look dingy or anything. They used some form of effect to make smoke but I believe it was a bit unnecessary. Everything was shot decently but their editing had too many fade in and out transitions. In their visuals they also have graphics. I like that they attempted to make it as close to an actual infomercial but the graphics were a little simple. They had a lot of close up shots, and I think it would have been better to switch around but I understand that they wanted to focus on the product. Since the video is on tobacco it makes the audience more universal. It's directed at everyone who both smokes or is considering to smoke. Their ironical video is made to discourage them from buying into a product that would hurt them. Overall I believe it was a good PSA, the only enhancement would be to have maybe a more professional speaker and to have less fade transitions.

  2. Assignment #1: Previous Winners Critique

    Tobacco-Free 1st place winner for HMSA- “Item Number: Death” (Maui High School),
    TRT= 31 sec., 2009

    In my opinion this video won first place because its concept is clever and its message is easily read. Even though the graphics were kind of generic, it was good enough to earn first place and they did a good job of making it look like a regular infomercial/paid program ad. They also included after effects by adding smoke around the graphics. The message of the video is to show that people are addicted to cigarettes and they fall for whatever they see on tv. Their target audience is basically everyone because a lot of people watch television. They also try to make a point by including an on-phone interview of a smoker who has a hard time talking. This video can be enhanced by making the graphics more believable and by making the camera a lot more steady.

    Fitness/ Nutrition 1st place winner for HMSA- “A Good Day to Walk” (Myron B. Thompson),
    TRT= 31 sec., 2009

    In my opinion this video won first place because they were able to use maya animation in a way that looks cool to everyone. This is also around the same time Transformers came out so people were excited and impressed to see it “re-made” by a high school. It also looked more appealing because they had animation and live action at the same time. The car that was created in maya looked so realistic and I couldn’t even tell it was fake until it transformed. They also payed close attention to detail and made sure that all the glass and metal on the car looked believable, including the shadows of the actual vehicle. The message of the video is to show that one of the reasons why so many people are unhealthy is because of driving. Instead of walking or riding a bike, people would rather drive their cars because they are too lazy.. Their target audience is basically everyone who drives. They also try to make a point by making a fat guy be the victim. This video can be enhanced because if you look at the wide over the shoulder shot of when the man was standing by his car, the man looked way bigger than his car and they didn’t do a good job of matching up the sizes.

    Drug-Free 1st place winner for HMSA- “Can’t Hear Me” (Waianae/Campbell High SChool),
    TRT= 31 sec., 2009

    In my opinion this video won first place because they did it through the perspective of a little kid. It is a lot more emotional when you see a little kid who is affected by the actions of others because it seems like they are helpless. It also looked more appealing because they made the background color gray and gloomy and that sort of gave it a sad mood also. They also did a good job of focusing only on the little boy by making him colored and everything else gray. The message of the video is to show that whenever you are high, other people are affected by your actions also, especially of the ones who really care about you. Their target audience is basically everyone who smokes occasionally. They also try to make a point by making it seem like the older brother does not hear anything and is too focused on himself. This video can be enhanced because the boy had to read his lines from a paper and it was kinda obvious.

  3. The three videos that stood out to me would be A Good Day to Walk (Myron B. Thompson), Lose Yourself (Maui High School) and The Smoking Game (Waianae High School). The reason why I think that these three videos had a great chance of winning is because they were different from the others. The Smoking game and Lose yourself both had good concepts that set them from the others.

    A Good Day to Walk was a very detailed and overall good video. But in my opinion the lighting was a little bright but the editing and the audio was perfect. The visual elements were on the dot and so were the aesthetic elements. The message that this video was encouraging was to start walking more and the audience was everyone. I think that the way to enhance this video would be too make the transformer more “real” if it’s possible. The Run time was 31 Sec. and Myron B. Thompson (Moku Moikeha, Calvin Collins Jr., Caysey Collins, Austin Gatewood, Collin Hamby, Jaron Kodama and Sean Tito-Agustin). The category was Fitness and nutrition in the 2009 Teen Video awards.

    Lose yourself was a very different video from the others. In this video they used a blue light lighting. The shots and framing could’ve been better and so could the pacing. But the message was to stay away from drugs because you can lose yourself and it was to everyone. Adding a picture of you being a drug addict at the ending, and possibly changing the blue lighting could’ve enhanced this video. The run time was 31 Sec. and Maui High School (Taylor Edwards). The Category was Drug-Free in the 2009 Teen Video awards.

    The Smoking game was the last video I chose. In my opinion I think that this video should of won because it was super good. Everything was perfect as far as the editing and the lighting. The message for this video was to not even start smoking. But the only thing that I would change about this video was that then guy at the ending looked like he was about to laugh getting filmed and the fighting part was to short. Thus, causing the ending to focus on the guy for a long time. The run time was 31 Sec. and Waianae High School (Sean Bongo, Preston Exzabe, Misha Jones, Cody Kau, Macneil Moresca, Samuel Spake and Jayson Wu). The category was Tabacco-free at the 2009 Teen Video awards.

  4. Video #1: “Just Dumb” by Saint Louis School
    Run Time: 31 Sec
    Tobacco-Free

    I like video because it was pretty funny and because of that, it was engaging. It was also very unique as well. The effects weren’t the greatest but because of the concept of the video, it didn’t need to be. The acting wasn’t the greatest either but just like the effects, it not really needed either.

    Video #2 “Item Number: Death”
    Run Time: 31 Sec
    Tobacco-Free

    I like this video because of the idea. I wasn’t to excited about the graphics or effects but the idea was really good. I like how they also had the callers and the way they acted and sounded. It was very similar to the feel of the previous one, comedy mixed with seriousness. It was really good. The quality wasn’t too great and the main actor could have been better, but overall it was pretty good

    Video #3 “Internet Safety Tales”
    Run Time: 31 Sec
    Internet Safety

    I like this one (not because it’s from Waianae high school) because it was a really good idea. The quality was good, the narration was good too and the illustrations were really nice. I like how they took something like a fairy tale and turned that into something very cool and unique. It’s also like it because there are possibility for a sequel so that’s what makes it even better.

  5. Previous Winners Critique by Shanese Johns

    The first video I have chosen to review was the winner of HMSA 2009 “Internet Safety Tales” done by our own, Heidi Neidhardt , Melody Rigney and Tracy Ann Humann from Waianae High School. They won first place in this competition and the video ran for 31 seconds. The story line was well written and I believe it had an effective message. The lighting and audio and total style of the animation matched extremely well with the theme of the video. The music choice went well with the visual, and the narration was well read as well. I’d say they transitioned well between scenes and frames. They were targeting a large audience, those who use the internet and chat with strangers. I wouldn’t change anything in the video. It was executed well and I believe it was very effective.

    The second video was from Myron Thompson Academy, called “Cyberbully Rap”. Done by Moku Moikeha, Jaron Kodama and Sean Tito-Agustin, Teacher: Michael Pai. It ran or 27 seconds. The concept of video was good, and so was the animation visually. Something I didn’t like was the voice in it. It was softer than the music so I wasn’t able to hear the words they were saying. That made it hard to grasp the message they were trying to portray. Things like transitions and angles were a good aspect. The video was targeting possibly people who have been cyber-bullied. It could also be a warning to never start things like that. If I could do it over, I’d fix the audio. I’d lower the volume of the music and allow the message to be heard.

    The final video I chose to review was called "Can't hear me" done by Waianae High School. Students : Ashley Guerrero, Samuel Balecha, Brittni Dinong, Jonathan Dinong, Mhanivel Moresca, Aaron Oshiro, Brittney Rojo, Sean Sarajina and Jonathan Straley. It ran for 31 seconds. The idea of the video was to show how drugs effect people and their behavior. It won first place in the drug free category. The story line was well written and I believe it had an effective message. The lighting and audio went perfectly together. Also the script was well written and played a major part of the video. I thought the did a really great job therefore I wouldn’t change anything in their video.
